Road repairs ready for millions of travelers going home for holidays

The Ministry of Public Works on Tuesday said major road repairs in many parts of the nation had been completed in anticipation of mudik, when millions of Muslims return to their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri on Sept. 10-11.

The exodus causes severe traffic jams and heavy road damage, particularly in Java and Sumatra.

Minister calls for Ahmadiyah to be disbanded

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said Monday that the Jamaah Ahmadiyah faith — who claim to be Muslim — had to be broken up, as followers violated regulations and were not Muslim.

The minister was quoted as saying after a hearing at the House of Representatives that Ahmadiyah, which has 200,000 followers across the country, “must be disbanded immediately”. If not, “problems would continue”..

Police instructed to be strict against violent organizations

National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri instructed his subordinates on Tuesday not to  hesitate to take strict actions against mass organizations which tended to disturb security.

“There is no need to hesitate any longer for the officers to take strict actions on the field,” Bambang said at the Presidential office in Jakarta as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Special train coaches for women, elderly during Idul Fitri

State-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (KA) will provide special coaches for women and elder people on long-distance economy class trains during the Idul Fitri holiday.

"This is part of our services to give security and comfort to home-bound travelers who need special care such as women and old people," Bambang S Prayitno, a spokesman of the PT KA`s Operation 2 in Bandung, said Sunday.

Govt called on to repair damaged roads for Idul Fitri travelers

A legislator has called on the government to repair damaged roads in order to provide travelers with good transportation services in the runup to the post-fasting month festivities.

"A lot of road sections in different parts of the country while the number of Idul Fitri travelers using public transportation this year is expected to increase by 6.35 percent to about 15.5 million," Abdul Hakim of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission V for transportation affairs, said here over the weekend.

Lebaran travelers need safety, health guarantee

The exodus of millions of annual home-bound travelers is expected to start in the next two weeks and will peak one day before the post-fasting Idul Fitri or Lebaran holidays which begin on September 10, 2010.

If the number of travelers this year is similar to that in 2009, it means that about 27 million Lebaran revelers will be returning home-towns to have family reunions and to celebrate Lebaran festivities. Last year the country saw about 27 million travelers using all modes of land, sea and air transportation means throughout the country.

People in Jakarta have been urged not to give alms to street beggars and thereby to help reduce the number of beggars coming to the national capital.

In response to the rising number of beggars in the run up to the Islamic festivity, Tatang Suyanto, an official of the social rehabilitation service of the Jakarta City Social Services Office, said on Thursday the best way to reduce the number of beggars in the capital was by not giving alms to them.

Global sukuk could hit $30b in 2010 - report

Global sukuk issuance could reach $30bn in 2010, according to a new report by Kuwait Finance House (KFH).

The study said that sukuk issued globally jumped by 116.3m to $16.5bn during the first half of 2010, compared to $7.6bn during the same period last year, according to UAE daily Khaleej Times.

Corruption in Indonesia has become so ingrained it can only be eradicated through a national movement led by the head of state, and not just by a commission, chairman of the advisory council of the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said.

Hasyim who is now head of the Al Hikam Islamic boarding school in Depok made the statement here Saturday when asked to comment on the granting of a presidential pardon to a convicted corrupter and the conditional release of a number of others, including the father-in-law of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's son.

First world zakat forum hosted by Indonesia

In a meeting of the World Zakat Forum (WZF) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, in 2007, Indonesia was appointed to host the first WZF conference. This was revealed by WZF committee chairman Mohammad Arifin Purwakananta to the meeting with press held by the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) in Cikini, Jakarta, on Thursday.
   
"By way of the fora initiated by the zakat institutes in Indonesia and Malaysia, for the development of zakat throughout the world, the WZF came into being," Arifin said.

Saudi Arabia raises RI's hajj quota to 221 thousands

Saudi Arabia has raised Indonesia's hajj quota to 221 thousand pilgrims in 2010 from 211 thousand pilgrims previously, a Religious Affairs Ministry official said.

The new hajj quota was 14 thousand lower than Indonesia had earlier sought, Abdul Ghafur Djawahir, secretary of the ministry's directorate general hajj and minor hajj, said here on Thursday.

Amended constitution cannot be applied to incumbent president

Constitutional expert Jimly As`shiddiqie said if the article on the presidential term in the 1945 Constitution was amended it could only be applied to the next president, not the incumbent.

"Should the amendment be carried out it can only be applied to the next president, not the incumbent president," Jimly said here on Wednesday in response to a lawmaker`s idea to amend the constitution to allow President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to extend his tenure by a third term.

Indonesia’s two main Muslim organizations decreed on Wednesday that corrupt officials were “infidels,” or a person without faith, the Jakarta Globe reported.

The stance was laid out at the launch of book titled “Corruptors Are Infidels” by the nongovernmental organization, Partnership for Governance Reform. It features theological studies by both the Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah.
