Christian leaders hope NU to remain inter-religous harmony pioneer

Christian leaders expressed hope here on Saturday that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) will remain a pioneer of inter-religious harmony in Indonesia.
The general chairman of the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI), Rev. Andreas Yewangoe, and the head of the presidium of the Indonesian Bishops` Conference (KWI), Mgr Martinus Dogma Situmorang. conveyed the wish when they visited the office of the largest Islamic organization in the country here on Saturday.r />
"We hope the new leadership of NU will continue the good relations that have been built by KH Abdurrahman Wahid and KH Hasyim Muzadi," Yewangoe said at the meeting with the new NU general chairman, KH Said Aqil Siroj.
They hoped NU as the country`s largest Islamic organization in the country would maintain the good relations it had built with various elements of the community that embrace other religions.
Yewangoe hoped that in the future there would be no more instances of violence done in the name of religion.
"As religious institutions we must be able to fight this kind of violence," he said as quoted by Antara.
Situmorang meanwhile said religous organizations like NU, Muhammadiyah, PGI and KWI must actively promote harmonious relationship among community members.
"We cannot see religions exclusively without seeing their correlations with community life. We must help the government so that it can work well," he said.
He hoped NU, PGI and KWI leaders could meet regularly to discuss common problems.
In response to the Christian leaders` hopes, Said Aqil Siroj said tolerance was one of the principles being upheld by NU always with regard community life.
Therefore, NU and its Islamic boarding school community would always use civil ways of religious propagation.
"At NU schools, the teachers are stern when teaching religious law but when they leave the schools and communicate with the people of various backgrounds during propagation they will be softer," he said. (dar)
