Israeli forces have threatened to board a new Gaza-bound international aid ship if it does not reroute to the southern Israeli port of Ashdod.

An Israeli military spokeswoman, Avital Leibowitz, told reporters that the troops were ready to confront the Rachel Corrie ship.&l<>t;br />
"Our soldiers will board you if you refuse to change course... We are ready to use force to defend ourselves," AFP quoted the Israeli official as saying on Saturday.

The warning came after the Rachel Corrie did not take notice of Israeli military calls to redirect to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Israeli officials had earlier warned activists on the Irish ship not to set sail for the Gaza Strip.

However, the activists insisted on the humanitarian nature of their mission, saying that they were determined to break the three-year-long blockade of the coastal region and deliver 1,000 tons of supplies to the impoverished Gazans.

Earlier on May 31, Israeli commandos attacked the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla aid convoy, killing at least nine activists and injuring more than 40 others. (dar)
