President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the US attack on Iraq on the pretext of possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) stopped the country's progress for dozens of years and destroyed a significant part of 7000-year human civilization situated there.
Speaking at his first press conference in the New Iranian Year (started March 21), he added that besides thousands of people have either been killed and injured, or have become homeless.<>
The president said, "No WMDs were found in Iraq and the Iraqi dictator was overthrown. However, despite formation of a legal parliament and government in the country, foreign troops continue to victimize people.
"Is there any legal body today to ask the foreign forces in Iraq the reason for inflicting such a great damage on the country? Ahmadinejad pointed to the 33-day war launched in Lebanon by the Zionist regime as another sign of the United Nations Security Council's inefficiency.
The president said, "During the war in Lebanon, the country underwent the worst bombardment in the contemporary history. Innocent children and women were killed. But were the relevant damages compensated?
"The Security Council can hardly do anything in facing such catastrophes and every time a move is taken to this end, some big powers either veto or prevent it." (irn/dar)
