The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) received a courtesy call of the Chinese Muslim Association (CMA) at the PBNU headquarters Monday (16/2). Secretary general of CMA Imam Ishaq Ma accompanied by Saiful Ahmar of the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taiwan was warmly welcomed by some members of Syuriyah (advisory Council) and Tanfidziyah (executive council) of PBNU.
As reported the PBNU visited Taiwan a couple of months ago in the frame of officially announcing an establishment of the Taiwan's Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch Board.<>
The figures of PBNU receiving the entourage were Drs H Masrur Ainun Najih (deputy secretary of Syuriah), Dr Endang Turmudzi, MA (secretary general), Drs H Taufiq R. Abdullah (deputy secretary general), Ing HM Iqbal Sullam (deputy secretary general), and Emha Nabil Haroen (supreme council of the Taiwan's PCINU).
Ishaq Ma said that formerly he had ever met with figures of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization. "Some times ago when I was in Taiwan I met with KH Hasyim Muzadi, H. Masrur, and Ust Nabil," he said.
While Masrur Ainun Najih expressed Hasyim Muzadi's apology for not being able to welcome CMA and its entourage.
"Actually general chairman of PBNU (LH Hasyim Muzadi) knew the CMA's visit. Nevertheless he expressed his apology for not being able to receive it because he is now in Mataram West Nusa Tenggara," he said.
During the nearly three-hour meeting, Ishaq Ma asked many things dealing especially with the history and the management of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).
"There are two models of pesantren in Indonesia. First pesantren being able to issue certification that can be used (by santri) to pursue other levels of education. Second, pesantren being not able to issue certification," Endang Turmudi said, adding that these models of pesantren focused more on moral education and the importance of having a strong character of autonomy.
Meanwhile Ishaq Ma greatly appreciated and was amazed with the autonomy of pesantren still capable of managing themselves without depending on other parties' assistance.
"I am really amazed there have been pesantren do not expect to receive such assistance from government but they have still run with their own autonomy and efforts," he said. (bil/nam)
