General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that NU had now faced three challenges, namely extremism, liberalism and communism, adding the first two were from within Islam itself.

"We have faced liberalism challenges. It can gradually threaten both akidah (creeds) and syariah," said Hasyim as receiving a visit of the grandson of the leader of the Islamic Revolution leader in Iran Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Sayyed Yaser Khomeini at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta Friday (6/2).<>

The liberalism, Hasyim said, would not only give such negative impacts to Islam, but it would also disturb other religions to be liberalized. The
idea from the West has destroyed Catholic and Christianity in Europe.

In addition to facing liberalism, Hasyim said, NU had also faced extremism from within Islam itself. If the liberalism could affect both akidah and syaria, the extremism could be able to threaten the image of Islam.

"Those who bring Islam with violence can harm Islam in Indonesia," he said.

In regard with the idea of communism, Hasyim argued that it was officially banned in Indonesia but its line of thought and ideology have still been evolved especially th idea of not believing in one God or atheism.

"The Indonesian Communism Party (PKI) has officially been banned, but the state is impossible to ban an unseen ideology. We face it with wariness and preaching," Hasyim told Sayyed Yaser Khomeini.

While Yaser was of view that there had still been communism movements and hostility against religion, adding the movements were now more complex for using other faces.

However, Yaser explained, the movements would not affect Muslims because divinity is the natural tendency of human beings.

"Perhaps for a while people may accept the communism views. But because it has no its own roots, foundation, communism would not be able to meet its development," Yasser said.

In the meantime, the two figures called on Muslims not to keep silent and called for the importance of mass organizations to give understandings to their followers in addition to dealing with any movement capable of destroying Islam. (rif)
