Hasyim scheduled to give speech at the Philipine national summit of ulema

General Chiarman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi is scheduled to give a speech at the 2nd National Summit of Ulema in the Philipines that would be help on January 26-29, 2009 at the Imperial Palace Suites in Quezon City, Philipines.
Hasyim who is also the president of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP) would give the speech dealing with the Southeast Asian Islam and the challenges of modernity.<>
The summit would reportedly involve some 200 ulema that would expectedly launch their first national organization after a series of consultations with the ulema from all over the country where they discussed and endorsed the draft by-laws.
Second, the summit would also provide an opportunity for the ulema to discuss issues that are important to the ummah.
Third, the summit would also provide for the new ulema organization to network and take lessons from strong organizations.
The organizing committee of the forum organized by the Philipine Council for Islam and Democracy with the support from the British and Netherlands embassies expects Hasyim to share his success in leading the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) for playing its significant role in Indonesia.
The committee also hopes the secretary-general of the International Conference of Islamic scholars to give the Philipine ulema some insights on the importance of the role of organizational unity in addressing the challenges faced by Muslims today.
While, the theme of the summit is "One Message, One Ummah: Ulema Unity for Peace and Development". (dar)
