The Malang Manpower and Transmigration Agency, East Java, supported the Saudi government`s intention to stop recruiting Indonesian migrant workers (TKI).

"I always agree if Saudi Arabia stopped recruiting TKIs, because both the Indonesian and Saudi governments failed to guarantee the safety and protection of TKIs," head of the Malang manpower and transmigration agency Djaka Ritamtama said Wednesday.r />
He said the Saudis are aloof, placing the Indonesian migrant workers in a difficult position.

Another important thing in need for serious attention is the great number of illegal TKIs in that country, producing a TKI black market and improper TKI living quarters, which had also been posing a problem in Saudi Arabia.

With the increasing TKI problems in that country, he said, its government became practically helpless in facing the TKI problem eventually decided to stop recruiting TKIs.

"I fully agree if the Saudi government realized the `threat`. The decision also served as a protection for the TKIs," he pointed out.

Touching on TKIs from Malang regency, Djaka admitted that some have gone to Saudi Arabia illegally, but they left from other areas, instead of from Malang.

Actually, he added, the remittance of TKIs in Malang regency is quite great, reaching Rp95 billion per year, and 30 percent of which was contributed by the TKIs in the Middle East.

According to the latest official data, the number of TKIs in Saudi Arabia from Malang regency reached one million.

"If the recruitment of TKIs in Saudi Arabia is halted, which led to mass repatriation, we have prepared new jobs for them, like making them to become engaged in the farming sector," he said.

And the TKIs who had worked in the informal sector, will be transferred to the formal sector. "The TKIs from Malang still have wide opportunities of employment in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore," he said. (ant/dar)
