The phenomenon of the liberalization of religious thoughts within the NU young cadres had made chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj (Kang Said) deeply concerned.
Kang Said admitted that he himself greatly appreciated any discourse of religious thoughts studied by the NU cadres if it is not opposed to teachings having so far been developed and preserved by the Nahdliyin-based organization.<>
"If the discourse is just in talks, it's understandable. But if it has come to the foundation of organization, it is (very) dangerous," he said at the Annual Meeting of the Alumni Council of NU Students Association here on Monday (1/2).
He further explained that the liberalization of thought should carefully and continuously be taken into consideration for it will lead to such other liberalizations as economy, culture and religion.
"One of the forms of cultural liberalization is emerging viewpoint over the unimportance of kissing hands of kiai (clerics) and parents,' he said.
He said that the case of a judicial review request at the Constitutional Court filed by a number of NGOs in terms of the 1965 Blasphemy Law was as a result of the liberalization of religious thoughts. In this case, he said, NU must be opposed to the request.
Kang Said also called for the importance of preserving tolerant and moderate religious thoughts.
"Religious radicalism is wrong and of course religious liberalism is also wrong," he said.
While the Alumni Council in its recommendation asserted the importance of maintaining and preserving moderate religious thoughts and actualizing values of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) into organization.
"The presantren value that should be actualized is the spirit of modesty, independence and moderate thought paradigm which is far from both extremism and liberalism," chairman of the Alumni Council Hilmi Muhammadiyah said. (sam/nam)
