The top Islamic council in Malaysia first banned women from wearing trousers, and now they are banning yoga. The council fears yoga and trousers may lead girls to lesbianism.

According to this Muslim group, whoever wears trousers and practices yoga is more likely to become a lesbian.<>

After giving a seminar on Islamic jurisprudence, the National Fatwa Council’s Deputy Director-General Othman Mustapha told Malaysian news agency Bernama that an official announcement will be released soon.

Professor Zakaria Stapa of the Malaysia's Islamic Studies Centre at Universiti Kebangsaan, was also at the seminar. Today he said Muslims who had taken up yoga should stop practicing it as soon as possible because it will damage their faith.

Yoga originated in India and has been practiced by millions of people for more than 3,000 years mainly to improve the body and mind health. But the Islamic group thinks it promotes lesbian sex.

Last week the Fatwa Council also issued a decree to stop the tomboyish behavior in girls, including those wearing trousers. They said it was immoral and would lead to the practice of lesbianism.

Malaysia has a population of 27 million, more than half of them are Muslims. Gay and Lesbian sex is prohibited in Malaysia.

How they will impose the ruling on people in Malaysia who hold other religious beliefs is not clear. Malaysia is a multi-religious society, and as Wikipedia describes: "Approximately 60.4 per cent of the population practice Islam; 19.2 per cent Buddhism; 9.1 per cent Christianity; 6.3 per cent Hinduism; and 2.6 per cent traditional Chinese religions."

Those who practice Hinduism in Malaysia will be certainly offended by this ruling. (dgj/dar)
