Tegal, NU Online
Al Hikmah Islamic boarding school (pesantren) located in Brebes regency, Central Java province and being prepared to host a Nahdlatul Ulama regional conference of Central Java is an appropriate choice. The choice may be considered as such momentum to return NU to its initial basis.
The statement was made by chairman of the Tegal's NU Branch Board, H Basukiyatno. "The NU has initially been developed and extended in pesantren," he was quoted by NU Online's Wasdiun as saying here on Friday (4/7).<>
Basukiyatno explained that as the religious-based educational institution, pesantren could be viewed as both laboratory and center for NU development. For that reason, he added, the spirit of NU struggle should be returned to it.
He even expressed his objection if the NU conference or similar forums would be held in hotels or many other glamorous places. For him, all this would tend to keep the NU away from pesantren. In addition, the clerics and ulemas would feel much more comfortable in pesantren.
Basukiyatno said the existence of pesantren having so far been described as as traditional institution and left behind modern educational systems was not correct. He added, the pesantren whose big contribution in producing national leaders had now come to great changes.
"Who says pesantren is not modern. The clerics have now not only read newspapers but also accessed internet to have information," Basukiyatno said, adding that the General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi had already made a news portal called as 'NU Online'.
Al Hikmah Pesantren led by KH Masruri Mughni is located in Benda village, Sirampog sub district, Brebes regency. In this place some 360 participants from 36 NU branch boards throughout Central Java would take part in the conference that would reportedly be held on coming 11-13 July. (rif)
