The Elections Supervising Committee (Panwaslu) has filed a complaint with the Sidoarjo Police against the House of Representatives' Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar for his alleged involvement in vote-buying ahead of this year's legislative elections.

Panwaslu Sidoarjo chairman Qomarud Zaman said Thursday his side had asked the police to quickly investigate the case to determine Muhaimin's legal standing as a legislative candidate.<>

"The complaint was filed soon after the *vote-buying* case occurred last Friday, and we hope the case will be investigated immediately and thoroughly ahead of the upcoming polls," he said, adding the committee had also included a package containing money and photos of similar packages being distributed as evidence for the police.

Qomarud said the complaint was based on a report that Muhaimin and fellow candidate Mahmudatul Fatchiyah gave out packages of money and rice to a crowd at an informal gathering in Kalisampurno, Tanggulangin, on Friday.

"The packages highlighted with the ticked pictures of Muhaimin and Mahmudatul were distributed by their campaign team, comprising of Mumfathicha, Lilik and Suyatno, to all gathered participants," he was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying.

Muhaimin, chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB), is running for a seat at the House of Representatives for the 2009-2014 period for the constituencies of Porong, Jabon, Krembung and Tanggulangin, while Mahmudatul is seeking a seat at the Sidoarjo regency legislative council.

"The police should process the case soon because the vote-buying goes against Law No. 10/2008 on legislative elections and carries a maximum two-year jail sentence and a maximum fine of Rp 24 million," Qomarud said.

Mahmudatul, former head of the mudflow-devastated Renokenongo village in Porong, denied the allegations of vote-buying, saying he was invited by the local branch of the country's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, to be introduced as a legislative candidate at the gathering.

"Unless I'm mistaken, most legislative candidates do the same thing," he said.

On Monday, the Lamongan District Court sentenced PKB legislative candidate Afif Muhammad to six months in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of Rp 6 million for vote-buying, but the local polling body has yet to annul his candidacy because of an appeal pending with the high court. (dar)
