National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar said he had yet to agree to PKB chief patron Abrurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid`s request for the dismissal of a number of the party`s functionaries.
"Actually the matter is being handled by PKB secretary general Lukman Edi and the process is not yet completed," Muhaimin said here on Wednesday.<>
He expressed hope that all related figures could have mutual understanding among themselves in order not to worsen the party`s internal conflict.
Muhaimin said he had even started to get along with Gus Dur.
"Gus Dur and I have frequently met to discuss issues related to the party`s affairs," Muhaimin said after installing the members of PKB regional executive board in Kediri.
Even several people who were close to Gus Dur had been included in the lineups of some of the party`s regional executive boards.
"We have accommodated several people from Gus Dur`s camp," Muhaimin said, adding that the PKB chief patron had asked him to dismiss a number of party functionaries who, according to Gus Dur, were plotting to expel him from PKB.
On the occasion, Muhaimin Iskandar who is concurrently House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker said political parties in Indonesia should no longer become a burden to the government which was struggling to deal with the impact of the global economic crisis.
"Political parties should support the government instead of becoming a burden," Muhaimin said, adding that he fully supported President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who prescribed 10 steps on Monday to avoid negative impact of the United States-triggered global financial crisis on Indonesia`s economy.
In step nine the president said the year 2009 was a political and general elections year. This fact as well the current crisis should be good reason for all parties to avoid partisan politics and put the people`s interest above group or individual interests.
"We fully support step nine, and hoping that the political parties management will no longer intervene government policy," Muhaimin said. (ant)
