Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) Amidhan expressed his regret over a violent action committed by the Islamic Defenders Front against the masses of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Beliefs (AKKBB) at the National Monument (Monas) Square in Jakarta.
"We really deplored the incident. I am really opposed to FPI`s action," he said here on Sunday (1/6).<>
He said that MUI had called on the public to avoid provocation and violence against the misleading Ahmadiyah sect.
Earlier, AKKBB carried out a peaceful activity at the national monument square. But on the sidelines of their activity, around 200 people using FPI attributes suddenly stormed to the Monas Square where the Alliance`s activists were having a peaceful activity.
As reported by Antara news agency, the FPI masses went after and beat the Alliance`s activists most of whom were women with sticks while shouting anti Ahmadiyah sect`s yells. A policeman was mandhanled by five FPI symphatizes.
Shortly later, security personnel arrived to the site to protect the participants of the National Alliance from the attacks of the FPI cadres.
FPI Demonstration Coordinator Munarman said his side disagreed with the street rally of the AKKBB activists in support of the Ahmadiyah in this country.
In addition, Munarwam also urged the government to immediately carry out the decision of the Public as basis to ban the Ahmadiyah.
MUI Chairman again reiterated his side`s regret over the incident. But he also saw that such action of the National Aliance was also provocative.
Amidhan noted that the Alliance contained their support from the sect outside Islam. In fact, Ahmadiyah was the internal problem of Islam. (nam)
