As the followers of Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama which claims to have millions of followers, Nahdliyin are now expecting the coming of national leaders from NU-based political parties as part of their political aspiration.
"Nahdliyin (NU followers) expect the presence of national leaders from NU-based parties such as the National Awakening Party (PKB), the United Development Party (PPP), and the National Ulama Awakening Party (PKNU)," chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul ULama (PBNU) Masykuri Abdillah told NU Online here Sunday (1/3).<>
In the early stages of the reform era, the presence of NU-based parties was very important in playing their decisive roles in dealing with the national leadership. At least such figures as KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) of the PKB and Hamzah Haz of the PPP ever became president and vice president in the time.
Masykuri said, in today's national leadership succession, the parties had not yet been capable of promoting their figures as presidential and vice presidential hopefuls in the 2009 election.
He also expressed his concern over the fact that PKB as the NU-based party and co-founded by NU senior ulema had decided to support Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and presidential hopeful in the upcoming presidential election.
While PPP has yet to announce its presidential candidate in the upcoming election and PKNU as a new party has now still fuelled its energy to show its existence, he said. (mkf)
