Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar F. Mas'udi recently said that one of the aims of the establishment of Nahdlatul Ulama was to fight against Wahabism which constituted the mainstream religious doctrine in the time. A delegation called as the Hijaz Committee was sent to Mecca to call on the ruling authorities to give Muslims the freedom of worship.

Masdar said following the Saud dynasty mainly basing their religious doctrines on Wahabism, the ruling authorities had destroyed all legacies of the Prophet's era, prohibited Muslims from performing religious beliefs based on the four madzhab (schools of thought).<>

"Unfortunately, at present there have been many knowing nothing about the history and asking why the radical movement must be countered." he said.

Masdar added another important things inspiring the establishment of NU were the movements of Nahdlatul Wathon, Tasywirul Afkar and Nahdlatut Tujjar.

He said a religious organization should have religious thoughts capable of keeping up with any development, adding that "we may think as advanced as possible and could not allow what is forbidden and forbid what is allowed".

As for him, NU should soon manage its organizational management as part of its efforts to undertake its big agenda, saying NU had for over 30 years been oppresed by the New Order regime. (mkf)
