The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has called on all regional and branch boards of Nahdlatul Ulama across the country to stay on guard against any movements threatening the teachings of what called as Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja).
The Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization has also reminded the NU boards of the importance of making consolidation and giving more guidance to the ummah (people).<>
"Recently there have been more activities and movements conducted by some Muslim people in Indonesia that try to negate and annul the tradition of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah having so far been adopted and practiced by Nahdliyin (NU followers)," the circular letter issued by the PBNU said.
The letter was signed by chairman of the legislative council (Syuriyah) of the PBNU KH Hafidz Utsman, Secretary of the Syuriyah Prof Dr H Nazaruddin Umar, general chairman of the PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi and deputy secretary Taufiq R Abdullah in Jakarta on 30 August 2008 / 28 Sya'ban 1429 (Islamic calendar).
The letter was also delivered to all NU board members in all levels including committees (lajnah), institutions, and autonomous bodies.
As stated in the letter, the Nahdliyin must be ready in facing any threats posed by those who are possibly capable of propagating the teachings opposed to the Aswaja. In dealing with the threats, the Nahdliyin should first of all consider the importance of good moral values and legal rules.
In addition, the Nahdliyin should also strengthen cooperation with government especially its security officials in doing their duties and functions in keeping pubic order and security as well. (nam)
