Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar F. Mas'udi called for the importance of dialogue between ulema and NU young cadres having so far focused mainly on activities in dealing with the development of thought.
As speaking at a meeting so-called the Kajian Islam Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Kiswah) and held by the East Java's NU Regional Board (PWNU) over the weekend, Masdar said that liberalism within the body of NU was such a contemporary phenomenon. He made the remarks as responding to any critics voiced by ulema respecting the phen<>omenon.
As for him, if the NU young cadres were invited to have dialogue, called as santri in general and their arguments were heard, the liberalism would in turn not emerge.
"This is a while condition, but if there is a dialogue this (phenomenon) would not occur," Masdar said, adding that the moderate ulema would be able to bridge the dialogue.
In the meeting attended by such NU figures as KH Anwar Iskandar, KH Hasyim Abbas, KH Ali Masyhuri, Prof Dr Shonhaji and Prof Dr Istibsyaroh, Masdar stressed the importance of NU to have such ideas extremely needed by the nation.
Masdar explained what he has so far done by encouraging NU young young cadres to think progressively was to fill his leisure time, adding that anyway there must be limits, namely "not prohibiting what is allowed and not allowing what is prohibited like lesbianism, for any reason it must be forbidden."
In the meantime, he also criticized NU for some of the time being too tolerant with anything that can no longer be tolerable.
"We are too tolerant, even with intolerance by letting other people harm themselves, is all this due to our psychological state that we have ever a long time been intimidated," Masdar said.
Masdar also added that the glory of Islam could only be expected from Indonesia and all this could be represented by NU as a moderate religious organization. (yus)
