The advance team of humanitarian aid from Indonesia carrying medicines from the government was scheduled to be received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday.
The information on this was conveyed by the head of the Crisis Control at the Health Ministry, dr Rustam S Pakaya, MPH and the director for Middle East Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Aidil Chandra Salim, to Antara journalist Andi Jauhari after meeting with Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Palestinian Refugees Affairs Peter Ford here on Saturday morning.<>
The two Indonesian officials of the humanitarian team admitted this new development really made them confused, as there was no such an agenda like this.
"As a matter of fact, receiving humanitarian teams by the head of state is actually a big honor for us, as it is beyond our fancy," Rustam Pakaya was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
On Saturday morning, UN Special Envoy Peter Ford met with the Indonesian delegation consisting of Rustam S Pakaya, Aidil Chandra Salim, ad interim charge d`affaires of the Indonesian embassy in Amman Ari Wardhana, dr Lucky Tjahjono M. Kes of the health ministry, dr Joserizal Jurnalist, SP.BO of Mer-C, and dr Basuki Supartono of the Indonesian Red Crescent (BSMI).
Also participating in the team are a number of journalists representing some Indonesian TV stations, such as Mahendro Wisnu Wardono of Metro TV, Sahlan Basir of TVRI, Firtra Ratory of TV One, Ismail Fahmi of TV One, Hanibal Widada Yudya Wijayanta of ANTV and Nirzam Fahmi of Trans TV.
"President Mahmoud Abbas has actually known there will be an advance team from Indonesia carrying humanitarian aid. But a plan to receive the Indonesian delegation is exactly a new development and beyond our prediction," said Aidil Chandra Salim, a grandson of national leader H Agus Salim.
Coinciding with the transfer of medicines, Rp2 billion in cash or USD1.25 million of the total aid package from Indonesia will be handed over.
From Jordan, the Indonesian delegation will proceed their flight to Egypt to make preparations for the opening of a temporary field hospital in Rafah, a border area close to the Gaza Strip. (dar)
