The United Development Party (PPP) leader has signaled the party would not blame or ask for the government`s accountability over the controversial Bank Century bailout.
PPP chairman Suryadharman Ali, speaking at the opening of the party`s national working meeting here on Friday, said the government`s policy at the time could not be judged based upon current conditions and order.<>
He said the conditions and needs at the time were not the same as now. "It is illogical to judge the past conditions based upon present conditions," he said.
To support his idea he referred to the case of political parties receiving office buildings
from the government that happened during the past New Order era.
He said the government`s decision at the time could not be judged or blamed based upon current conditions.
He said the government was allowed to give office buildings to political parties then because it was regulated although the regulation was no longer in force.
"Even if the regulation is continued it does not mean that the policy was wrong," he said.
Suryadharma who is minister of religious affairs in the present cabinet would not confirm that his statement was the party`s official stance on the Bank Century case.
He said PPP had not yet made any decision because the case was still under investigation while data and evidence were also still being collected.
"The investigation of the case is not yet finished. Therefore PPP will not as yet take a stance," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
He said however that the party`s board believed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was not a person who condones corruption. "That`s what our conviction is," he said.
The House Bank Century Inquiry Committee is now still working to decide if there was foul play behind the government`s decision in 2008 to inject Rp6.7 trillion into the troubled bank to prevent it from collapsing. (dar)
