Jakarta, NU Online
The Indonesian and Syrian governments have agreed to urge the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to issue a "more effective and stronger" resolution to stop Israeli attacks on Palestine.

"If the existing resolution is ineffective, the UN Security Council should issue a stronger and more effective one to stop the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a ceasefire," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said at a joint press conference with visiting Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Naji Otri at the State Palace here on Monday.<>

President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Otri earlier held a one-hour bilateral meeting to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and efforts to strengthen cooperative relations between Indonesia and Syria.

Yudhoyono expressed disappointment about the fact that  UN Security Council Resolution 1860 proved unable to stop the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

He said  if the resolution remained ineffective to stop the crisis, Indonesia would propose that the United Nations hold an emergency meeting in cooperation with the UN Security Council to stop the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, as reported by Antara news agency, the Syrian prime minister declared his  agreement with  President Yudhoyono's proposal.

"We fully support President Yudhoyono's proposal that if Israel fails to abide by the resolution, a new, stronger and more compelling one should be issued to force Israel into stopping its attacks," Otri said.

However, Otri was pessimistic that Israel would abide by the  proposed new UNSC resolution because Tel Aviv had so far always ignored  UNSC resolutions.

"Israel has in the past rejected a number of resolutions calling on it to withdraw its troops from the areas they are occupying. Therefore, we hope the Israeli-Palestinian issue will be settled immediately," Otri said.

The Syrian prime minister also called on other Arab countries and the world's Muslim community to unite against Israel and force the Jewish state  to return all the lands it had robbed from Palestine. (rif)
