The Syrian government will give more scholarships specially for NU cadres without bureucratic channels like department fo religious affairs.
The statement was made by Syrian envoy, Bassam L. Khatib as meeting with general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj here on Friday.<<>br />
He said that the Syrian government through its embassy in Jakarta congratulated Said Aqil as newly elected general chairman of the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization.
Bassam L. Khatib also said that his government would invite Said Aqil to pay his official visit to Syria.
"We hope KH Said Aqil to visit Syria and hold talks with intellectuals, scholars and Syrian government officials, and in this regard, religious affairs minister and Syrian jurists (mufti)," he said.
Accompanied by secretary general of PBNU Iqbal Sullam and spokesman of International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) Ahmad Ridlo, Said Aqil expressed his gratitude to the Syrian government for giving more opportunity to Indonesian students in general and NU students in particular to continue their study in Syria.
In the meantime PBNU also expressed support for Syria- Israel dispute settlement in the Golan in a peaceful manner and without opening gunfire. (nam)
