Nationalization versus privatization

NU Online  ·  Rabu, 22 November 2006 | 10:02 WIB

Developments can be understood as efforts to fulfill the independence reached by the spirit of service to the nation's struggle. The first step of the development process is by setting up a solid government. It is expected to be able to ensure people’s prosperity by undertaking such economic developments in all sectors. In the colonial era, economic sectors were dominated by foreign privates. While following the fall of the Dutch government coincided with the birth of independence, Dutch colonial authorities still possessed the assets.

Though the age of the government was still young enough, yet it was absolutely driven by the spirit of revolution in order to liberate people. In addition, the government had with little fuss nationalized foreign companies such as banking, transportation, mining, and trade as well. It’s hard to cope for Indonesia to export. The Indonesia’s government was always accused of smuggling illegal things that were claimed as theirs or their foreign counterparts’.

<>The Indonesia’s power of diplomacy and military were then able to eliminate the opinion. The government of ours became a respected young nation, being able to create a stable economic system. It could finance all sectors such as education, bureaucracy, transportation, and military. All of the strategic sectors relating to people’s necessity had been dominated by the government for the nation’s interests. Though there were corruptions, but the people attained adequate portion. thousands of educational educations were established, roads were built, and local government clinics were also established to serve the people’s health.

But, everything is the opposite of the way it used to be when the ideal of liberalism introduced, the role played by the government was decreased. It could no longer organize many things including economic affairs. Finally, one by one of its nationalized companies struggled for by the government was then privatized or to say properly internationalized. In consequence, the nation’s revenue was increasingly decreased so that it could no longer help the people and even finance itself dealt with significant sectors like defense, bureaucracy, and general elections.

Even, all of the nation’s sectors have now been privatized. Ironically, the privates were formerly indigenous ones but now they are dominantly foreign. All life aspects such as banking, transportation, harbor, airport, health, retail business, industry, and in the area of services like wiper, cleaning service, courier and so on. All of them have been handled by foreigners. Consequently, the people’s chances to live better have been (being) increasingly hampered.

It’s very ironic if the government has vowed to eradicate poverty, but in fact most of the steps that it should expectedly take lead to the process of pauperization. Still fresh in our minds that our harbor and then airport have been privatized. As a result, the government could no longer determine tariff and prevent smuggling including how to uphold the nation’s security. If all of the strategic sectors have been handed over to foreigners, the chance of business for the people would be restricted because they have immense capital and strong management. In addition to their spirit to exploit, manipulate and embezzle tax.

In former times, Bang Kumis, Bu Surti or Kang Maman could easily open food stalls and coffee shops. At present, gigantic food companies such as centucky and A&W Mc Donald are taking every step possible to exist stronger. Bang Kumis, Bu Surti and Kang Maman’s are not as lively as Sturbuck mushrooming in every city corner with many consumers.

The government has not yet given opportunity for citizens to do business and compete with foreigners whose such auspicious moment to exploit the nation’s assets. The program of entrepreneurship development having been formerly campaigned is now useless because the government is now again prepared to be a servant of the foreign companies with minimum wage.

Seeing the fact, the pauperization would constantly come into being and be on the increase. Next it would be even experienced by our educated circles while working through the more efficient management of the foreign companies. As a result, they would lose their jobs. This in turn would lead to the coming of mass pauperization.

Compared to brilliant measures taken by a number of countries in Latin Amerika and other independent ones. They have purposefully nationalized foreign companies to increase their people’s prosperity. Meanwhile, the beloved government of ours has been now promoting privatization and internationalization of our national companies. Whereas, it’s clear that the step taken by the government has absolutely resulted in the people’s suffering. First, the people have lost their jobs. Second, their best results would be then brought to their homeland to finance any activities like sports, music concert, space research and oth
