Freedom as crime

Since the renaisance era, the West countries have always struggled for their individual freedom. The struggle has in turn led to what called as intellectual “enlightenment “ movement regarding human as its goal and destiny. The first and foremost struggled freedom was that the freedom of a state’s authority and religion to bear such reformation movement in Europe. it was likely unstoppable. It continued running till the coming of atheistic era.

Basically, the freedom was really positive because it has born creative men. Due to the men themselves or individual freedom were considered as judgments of everything, it has then become so anarchistic. All man made legal rules and constitution might no longer restrict the individual freedom including his/her wildness.

Several years ago, we were deeply disturbed by Danish artists and journalists making cartoons of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with full sarcastic acts. Following the protests of Islamic world, the country’s top officials and religious leaders said that it’s impossible to restrict them because the government has guaranteed the freedom of expression. They didn’t know that it has led to crime and even subversive acts.

If this case may be called as a freedom, why didn’t they use their freedom to make such neutral cartoons with all respect and sympathy. The cartoons were liable to insult and angered Muslims because Islam forbids the human representation of the prophet, and many believe that some of the images ridiculed the prophet. Likely, there was such ideology, religion, and tradition behind the deviant acts. In the meantime, Christian groups and the Denmark government asked Muslim leaders to understand their unstoppable liberal tradition. Ironically, they could no longer understand the Islamic tenets and tradition that publishing the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad was an insult. Finally, Muslims didn’t continued their protest. 

Several days ago, they made the same embarrassed event that once again hurts Muslims nationwide including the Indonesia’s biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Admitted or not, the Western people have regarded themselves as superior so they tend to be racialists and discriminative and considered that they alone house the rights while other countries as colonized ones. That’s a collective awareness of theirs. For long time ago till now they have all of the time colonized in any form and manifestation.  

Ironically, they have always voiced words of democracy, human rights, pluralism, anti-discrimination, and so forth. Not only that, they have been also too inclined to teach us the values they can’t implemented. Imagine, how many trainings, seminars, symposiums discussing about humanity the European countries have carried out including Denmark itself by inviting (human) activists across the world such as Indonesia and other Middle East countries. They have actually had no such civilization. They were polite to their European brothers. But they were so cynical to others. No matter who they were. They were the same, such as human right activists, artists, and diplomats.

Through their power in mass media, they could hide the weaknesses. But every body having both logical and reflective thought, he/she could no longer hide the weaknesses. Dealing with the countries having no such the awareness, please stop first of all conducting any trainings concerning issues such as pluralism, tolerance, and so on. They should again and again prove themselves that they can appreciate other people’s backgrounds regardless of religion, race, nation, and so on before undertaking such decolonization to cultures and changing their own attitudes. They have on moral rights to carry out any human agendas. 

We have still seen how they have taken a stand against world civilization in Irak, before plundering remaining ruins. There, they have even vanished human values in the name of wealth exploitation. They have all of the time voiced any pretext and alibi. Finally, everything was clear that they have invaded Irak because of the merely country’s wealth.
