Assembly's vice chairman asks Aceh to destroy terror network

Ahmad Farhan Hamid, vice chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), has asked the Aceh police to work hard to destroy the terror network reported to have been discovered in Aceh recently.
"I have asked the police to immediately address the reported existence of a terror network that has disturbed the situation in Aceh and this will certainly require hard work," he said here on Friday.<>
He made the statement after visiting the regional police headquarters in Jeulingke here.
Initially, he said, he wished to meet with the people who had been arrested and detained by the police in connection with the case.
However "the police asked me to cancel it. I can understand their request. They have already worked very hard in the field," he said.
Farhan said he had actually also planned to visit the area in a jungle in the Jantho area in Aceh Besar district which an armed group allegedly linked to a terror organization had used as a training ground.
"But after I met and talked with the Aceh Besar police chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Agus Susanto who said that the location is quite far and difficult to reach, I finally cancelled my plan," he said as quoted by Antara.
A police source said five people were last Monday arrested for being allegedly linked to a terror network in a five-day police operation in Aceh Besar district.
Police had also confiscated an M16 rifle, dozens of rounds of ammunition, military costumes and books on terrorist teachings from the arrestees.
The police were still searching for Other members of the group believed to have 50 members. (dar)
