As a religious social organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) should be independent and not involve itself in any political arena for it has returned to the Khittah (principle) so that it should focus more on how to evolve the teachings of NU and address the nation and people interest.
Leader of the Jombang's Tebuireng Islamic boarding school (pesantren) KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah) made the remarks as speaking at a meeting to succeed the NU 32nd congress in the Yasmin Hotel Makassar over the weekend.<>
"As an ordinary person, I know that I am already 67 years old. But some clerics from such pesantren as Lirboyo, Langitan, Situbondo, Jombang adn Tebuireng have come to me to reach my readiness as general chairman (candidate) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for considering that I am still fit enough," Gus Sholah said.
According to Gus Sholah, the ulema support has made him confident to take part in the NU 32nd congress which will be heldin Makassar in March next year.
In regard with the future of the Indonesia's Muslim organization, Gus Sholah said that NU should be capable of addressing any internal matters for improving the management of NU in various levels.
