Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that reviewing of the constitution amendment was important. It could be such a means to evaluate its impacts both negatively and positively. He asked whether the amendment would improve the nation’s condition or not.

Hasyim argued that it was a result of a National Ulema Meeting and Major Conference of NU in Surabaya last month. For him, the amended constitution has likely raised many problems. Nationalist circles including NU have reminded us to back to the purely 1945 Constitution.

“In each country there will be absolutely such changes in certain era. Yet, this is necessary to consider whether the amendment can address immediate and deniable needs or just a willingness that needs to be accommodated,” Hasyim said to NU Online at the PBNU Building, Jakarta on Thursday (3/8).

Hasyim then took an example that there has been a claim dealing with the tightly constitution driven by national executives. In consequence, it has made such centralistic administration. That’s why, he added, this should be reviewed by asking whether the mistakes have lied on the constitution itself or rules of legislation.

The leader of the Islamic Boarding School Al-Hikan Malang argued that the PBNU didn’t reject or approve the amendment. He again pointed out that we Indonesians should rethink it. (nam)
