An interfaith group of people marked the 40th day since the demise of former president KH Abdurrrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid with the launching and discussion of a book on the late leader written by Demien Demitra.

Present at the event at the Pura Adithyia Jaya at Jalan Daksinapati, Rawamangun, on Monday were representatives of the Islamic, Chistian, Hindu, Buddhist and Confucian communities as well some of Gus Dur`s old friends such as Bondan Gunawan and Remy Silado.<>

Demien`s book was titled "Sejuta Doa untuk Gus Dur" (A Million Prayers for Gus Dur) and the second he had written on the former president. His first book , titled "Sejuta Hati untuk Gus Dur" (A Million Hearts for Gus Dur) was launched last January 8.

In his second book Demien highlighted Gus Dur`s background as a pluralist while the first book chronicled Gus Dur`s life since birth.

"Gus Dur was a true pluralist. He remained steadfast in his own convictions but was also very tolerant about differences in human life in the fields of religion, culture and gender," said Damien who is a scenario writer, film director, photographer and painter.

The book containing a novel and collection of prayers recounts Gus Dur`s endeavors to help his fellow men, particularly those categorized as minorities who were not at full liberty to exercise their beliefs.

Damied said he had written the book in the hope it would inspire the younger generation to emulate Gus Dur`s pluralism.

Remy Sylado, a writer and one of Gus Dur`s old friends, said he was glad Demien had written and launched his book on Gus Dur.

"This book can help people think like Gus Dur, change narrow into wide views of life," said Remi whose pseudonym is Alif Danya Munsyi. (ant/dar)
