Makassar, NU Online
The NU 32nd congress which will be held in Makassar,  South Sulawesi, on 23-28 March 2010, is considerably  very special if compared with NU previous congresses.  The special is that the congress will be attended by some  30 mufti/ulema (Muslim scholars) from around the world.  Their presence in the froum is the first in NU history.

"The mufti will hold meetings taking up issues on how to  develop the Islamic world, today, (Monday). In addition,  they will also participate in the congress opening on  Tuesday," chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul  Ulama (PBNU) Masykuri Abdillah told reporters here on  Monday.

Masykuri who is also deputy <>secretary general of the  International Conference of Islamic Scholars said the  mufti would reportedly hold a meeting with Indonesian  president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at about 12.00  (local time zone) one hour before the congres opening.

"The meeting is based on the fact that as a largest  Muslim organization in the world, NU will understandably  ask for the mufti/ulema to further increase  communications among them," he said.

He explained that the meeting was extremely important to  show various developments of Islam in the country in  which for the last few decades such meeting has not  widely been recognized by ulema in Indonesia. As a  result there have some of the time been bad perceptions  related to the originality of Islam in Indonesia.

"It's true that NU has organized international forums since  the last seven years, especially the first International  Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) in 2004, the second  was in 2006 and the third was in 2008," Masykuri said.

He added, in the tomorrow's meeting, the mufti would  expectedly be capable of understanding and addressing  various problems facing Muslims around the world, in  addition to sharing fresh ideas with one another.

The mufti having so far been in the congress arena are  from such countries as Lebanon, Qatar, Oman, Syria,  The Netherlands, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan Russia,  Egypt, Australia, Afghanistan and Morocco. (arm)
