President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) on Tuesday to maintain its role as a social organization that rejects violence and extremism.
Speaking at the opening of the NU congress in Makassar, the President praised the NU as an organization that had been promoting peace, moderation and pluralism since its birth in the Dutch colonial era.<<>br />
“Since the colonial era, the NU has become a pioneer of the development of a civilization that embraces both Islamic and Indonesian values,” the President said.
Yudhoyono said NU leaders would continue to enlighten and educate members and followers of the country’s largest Muslim organization and promote Islam as a blessing for the universe.
The NU congress will mark a changing of the guard, after current chairman KH Hasyim Muzadi has opted to call it quits but is now bidding for the top post in the powerful NU legislative body. (jp/dar)
