Indonesia won the silver medal for the first time at the 14 Interternational Conference of Young Scientists (ICYS) held in St. Petersburg from April 21 to 27, 2007, spokesperson for the Indonesian Physics Olympiad Team Foundation (TOFI) said.
"After two consecutive years the Indonesian team won the bronze medal in the ICYS, it now managed to secure silver in the ecology field at the ICYS competition," the foundation’s public relation official, Srisetiowati, said here Sunday.<>
The silver medal went to Maria Rosyani Ekindriaty who is a second-grade student of St. Laurencesia Senior High School, who conducted a research on development of fibre reinforced composite material using natural fibre from plants.
Rosyani conducted the research along with Heidi Ongkowijaya who is a student of the same school. Rosyani represented six Indonesian teams sent to the International Conference of Young Scientists which was participated in by about 120 teams from 14 countries.
The participating countries are Poland, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Germany, Croasia, Chechna, Hungary, Macedonia, Ukraina, Brazil, Georgia, Belarusia, Lithuania and host Russia.
The International Conference of Young Scientists is a forum for the competition of research results in the physics, mathematic, computer and environmental sciences among young people aged between 14 years and 18 years old worldwide.
The competition is held annually with participating countries from Europe, America and Asia (Indonesia, India and Japan).
TOFI has established cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) which has been preparing an Indonesian team for the 15th ICYS in 2008.
The competition is held with a mission to make the younger generation closer to sciences and seek young potential researchers who were expected to play a role in the invention and development of sciences for the sake of technological and national developments in the future. (ant/dar)
