KPK expects NU to produce anti-corruption leaders

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Chairman Adnan Pandu Praja expressed his hope that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as the largest civil society organisation in the country would produce leaders that support corruption eradication, he said here recently.

Pandu attended the opening of the 33rd NU Congress in Jombang, East Java, that will be held until August 5, 2015. He said that if the congress results were related to the eradication of corruption then all NU members and sympathizers would follow.

"I hope this congress provides a solution for the nation to be free from corruption," Pandu said.

Pandu said the eradication of corruption in Indonesia was in need of support of the whole society. 

“There had been no decline [in the number of corruption cases], the seeds of corruption tend to exist in almost all aspects of the state’s life."

During the congress, NU will discuss and establish religious thematic issues, related to government policies, and society. They also will choose a Rais Am (supreme leader) and a new chairman.

NU was opened by the President Joko Widodo on Saturday evening. In his speech, Jokowi asserted that NU has made a major contribution in the life of the nation which is based on religious ​​and nationalist values.

Jokowi believed that NU and Indonesia could be the world’s reference on building a civil society. He said, with NU’s attitude that promotes a humane, open forum, nahdliyin (NU members) are instrumental in building an open, democratic, and fair world society. (masdar)
