Deputy Chairwoman of the Family Welfare Institution (LKK) of the Nahdlatul Ulama Central Board (PBNU), Nyai Hj Badriyah Fayumi stated that the most ideal way to support orphans is to accompany and protect their lives.

Nyai Badriyah quoted one of the words of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), namely, whoever takes care of and guarantees the life of an orphan, one day in Heaven will be side by side with the Apostle like two fingers, pointer finger and ring finger.

“The Prophet gave a guarantee of paradise to those who took care of orphans, a guarantee of paradise. Ana wakafilul yatimi hakadza, by showing two fingers. It's so close," the leader of the Bekasi City Mahasina Islamic Boarding School told NU Online, recently.

She explained, in another saying, the Prophet said that the best house is one in which there are orphans who get good treatment. Therefore, Allah SWT emphasizes through his word, never approach or interfere with the property of an orphan.

To the guardian or those who are entrusted with the care of the orphans' property, to be careful and pay more attention to the property as well as possible, starting from the beginning of its custody until the deadline for its delivery.

"So, the protection taught by Islam is material protection, compassion, substantive protection and also spiritual protection for the orphans," the wife of KH Abu Bakar Rahziz said.

In detail, the female Qur'anic commentator who graduated from Al-Azhar Cairo explained the true meaning of Kafil (to bear) is to provide protection to the souls of orphans by honoring and respecting their position, preventing arbitrary or tyrannical actions, rebuking, and any other bad treatment.

Not just giving cash

Other forms of caring for orphans could be done by being a caregiver for orphans in the family, becoming a donor, becoming a teacher (volunteer), and establishing an orphanage or institution that could guarantee their future.

“Well, if the child is left behind by his father, it means that the person who became the kafil is his mother or whoever then guarantees his/her life, guarantees his/her education, affection, health, and the development of his/her talents. So that orphans who lose their parents get love and guarantee for their future, then the language is wa kafilul yatim, not the person who gives envelopes (cash) to orphans," Nyai Badriyah explained.

Meanwhile, the momentum of Muharram which is often called Eid al-Yatama (Feast of Orphans), according to her, is a symbolic time, as a means of sharing happiness and teaching Muslims to love orphans more like Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This is contained in the book of Tanbih al-Ghafilin, Man masaha yadihi ala ra'si yatiim yaum Ashura rafa'allahu ta'ala bi kulli sya'ratin darajah.

“Symbolically, we have a community that is partly orphaned, which needs to be given special respect, specially organized to give them happiness. But that's not the only thing, I think," said Azhariyyin who was born in Pati, August 5, 1971.

She emphasized that the Messenger of Allah loved orphans very much. So, the good day (ashura) should be used as a momentum to support orphans. However, the hadith is further intended to hone the morals of Muslims to always give love to orphans, by protecting their body and soul, nurturing, and guaranteeing their lives.

“Compensation of any kind, and in any month is good, to share which is charitable and fun. But it doesn't just stop there, the most important thing is the purpose and substance of Islamic teachings towards orphans, which is to bear their life, provide space and opportunity, and replace the love of their parents," the daughter of KH Ahmad Fayumi Munji said.
