The General Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Said Aqil Siroj met the Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia, Ahmed Amr Ahmed Moawad at the Egyptian Embassy, ​​Jakarta, Sunday (26/2).

The meeting of the two prominent leaders took up several issues including the Egyptian Al Azhar University's plan to invite Kiai Said to speak at the one of the world's leading Islamic universities.

"(It is an) honor for us, Indonesian Muslims to be able to address Egyptian scholars, especially Al-Azhar prominent Muslim scholars," Kiai Said told Ahmed.

According to Kiai Said, his Egyptian visit will be used to establish possible cooperation in the field of education, so that the transmission of Islamic scholarship between Indonesia and Egypt is getting stronger.

"Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah has based its teachings to the Sunni scholars in Mecca, Medina and Al-Azhar. In today's era both Al-Azhar and Nahdlatul Ulama have a very strategic role," Kiai said added.

In addition, Kiai Said will also convey the NU commitment along with the world community to promote peace in the Islamic world. Egyptian society having a base of civilization is considerably in common with Indonesian Muslims.

"Peace in the Islamic world need to be promoted together so that some Muslim-majority countries that are still in conflict could quickly realize and continue the recovery efforts," Kiai Said said.

Meanwhile Ahmed did welcome and wish the NU mission to Egypt could be carried out successfully.

"We are now in a good relationship and our expectations for the relationship could go well," said Ahmed. (Mahbib/Masdar)
