Adam Malik`s son rejects allegation in Weiner`s book

Otto Malik, the eldest son of Adam Malik, the late former vice president, issued a strong denial that his father was a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent as alleged in a US book.
"Adam Malik was not a CIA agent, not a lackey of another nation, and not a traitor of his own country," Otto said here on Friday in comment on the allegation in the book written by The New York Time reporter Tim Weiner titled "Legacy of Ashes : the History of CIA."<>
"My father was a true fighter, a national hero, who fought in the national interest during his lifetime," Otto Malik was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
Adam Malik`s track record clearly showed that he always faithfully fought for principles opposed to imperialist colonialism at international forums such as the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Otto said.
Adam Malik also used to oppose US policies on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Cuban crisis, and China`s admission into UN membership .
His father, Otto said, also opposed other forms of oppression in the world in accordance with Indonesia`s independent and active foreign policy under which Indonesia also refused to be dictated by any foreign power.
Otto said Adam Malik was one of Indonesia`s best sons who also took an active part in the nation`s struggle for independence from Dutch and Japanese colonization.
Therefore, Otto said, the claim that Adam Malik was a CIA agent was "a lie and absurd act of malicious slander." He expressed concern that the book would mislead ordinary readers. .
According to an account on page 330 of the book, former CIA officer Clyde McAvoy claimed to have recruited Adam Malik as an agent after having met or interviewed Malik two or three times. The story was not backed up by documents nor did it mention the CIA membership code number for Malik.
"Can it be true that someone who is interviewed by a CIA officer automatically becomes a member of CIA?", Otto asked. (dar)
