The chairman of the National Mandate Party's (PAN) advisory council, Amien Rais, said Muhammadiyah and PAN would not leave each other because they had historical bonds.
"PAN will not be left by Muhammadiyah considering their historical relationship," he said after the opening of the 46th congress of the country's second largest Islamic organization held in concurrence with the organization's 100th anniversary.r />
Amien said PAN is also aspirative towards Muhammadiyah and therefore more than half of the members of the party faction in the House of Representatives are from Muhammadiyah.
"PAN also often fights for Muhammadiyah during discussions on national and regional budgets," he said.
Amien Rais who is also former chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), admitted he could not think of PAN to be left by Muhammadiyah like what some other political parties had experienced.
Muhammadiyah and PAN, he said, indeed do not have organizational or structural relationship but they have historical relationship.
He said PAN was born through Muhammadiyah's board meeting and therefore the historical fact could not be wiped out.
"Indeed during the party's growth view differences often occur but so long as Muhamadiyah remain diligent in education, health and religious activities and would not get involved in the political affairs too far everything will be fine," he said.
Amien also hoped PAN would not interfere Muhammadiyah and this was important so that Muhammadiyah would not be separated from the party`s history.
"So long as PAN continues to respect Muhammadiyah, does not interfere it to let it grow while Muhammadiyah also does not interfere PAN I think there will be good distribution of work," he said.
Amien who is also the party`s former general chairman viewed Muhammadiyah`s future would be brighter, saying its century of experience was the proof.
"Muhammadiyah is 33 years older than the Republic. It has surpassed independence period, parliamentary democracy, Pancasila democracy and the New Order regime. I did not see any slight problem in the political fields. So everything will be safe," he said.
Several political parties are currently facing problems such as the United Development Party (PPP) that has been left by its followers in the Syarikat Islam as the organization that sets it up and also Parmusi who would shift to support Golkar Party.
The support of the largest Islamic organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) to the National Awakening Party (PKB) has also been split and no longer solid.
Senior NU members that helped set up the party have been disappointed and set up PKNU party.
The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) that recently changed its Islamic ideology to become an open party is also feared to be left by its loyal constituents.
Golkar Party meanwhile is also facing a challenge following the emergence of National Democrat organization. One of its founding organizations, SOKSI, is now also facing divisions. (ant/dar)
