In recent days, hundreds of people have been flocking to the tomb of a respected Kwitang cleric in Cikini, Central Jakarta, not to pay homage but to collect what they believe to be sacred water that has begun gushing out of it.
The water began flowing on Thursday from the tombs of Habib Abdurrahman bin Abdullah Al Habsyi, a cleric known as Mbah Ali Kwitang, and his wife Syarifa. The tombs, which are next to each other, are on Jalan Inspeksi kali Ciliwung, Cikini.

Since then, about 200 locals have flocked to the site armed with jerrycans, buckets, bottles and glasses to collect the water that they believe is sacred and will give them good health and blessings. They don’t seem to care that the liquid is murky.
“I use it for drinking and cooking. It is sacred water,” local resident Hanafi told news portal Detik.com as she carried off four liters of the water.
Another resident, Gilani, told Detik.com that he went to the site as soon as he heard that the water could cure diseases. “I found out this morning and immediately came over because I heard drinking it could heal the sick. Inshallah [God willing],” he said.
Habib Muhammad Amin bin Soleh, a sixth-generation descendant of the cleric, said people might think the water is special because they believe Kwitang, who died in 1881 and is believed to be one of those who spread Islam in Jakarta, was a saint.
But he said the family did not want to encourage this belief.
He said people young and old had been using the water for drinking, cooking and bathing, which the family did not want to happen.
“It’s just a natural phenomenon, not because it is sacred or something like that. Don’t fall into syirik,” or believing in something other than God’s works, Muhammad said.
The area around the tomb, Muhammad said, was being dredged when water started spurting.
The tombs will be relocated because the 3,000-square-meter graveyard in which they lie is to be cleared for an apartment building, he added.
Mauritz Napitupulu, president of city’s water company, said he would check on the water outflow as he worried that it came from a leak in the company’s pipes.
“I will send a team to check whether in the location there is a water-pipe connection or not,” Mauritz said. (jg/dar)
