Asean, GCC condemn Israeli attack on Flotilla

Foreign Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at their meeting in Singapore Tuesday agreed to strongly condemn Israel`s attack on an international humanitarian flotilla the day before.

In their joint communique, they also extended condolences to the relatives of those killed in the attack and pressed for prompt release of those detained by Israeli authorities, spokesman of the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore Yayan Ganda Hayat Mulyana said on Tuesday night. />
It was the Indonesian delegation that proposed the inclusion of clauses condemning the Israeli attack in the joint communique, Yayan said.

The foreign ministers also underscored the importance of international cooperation to press Israel to account for the attack according to international laws and urged the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities including forming a fact-finding team to probe the attack.

The Indonesian delegation to the two-day meeting which ended on Tuesday was led by Foreign Minister Marty M Natalegawa.

The meeting also agreed on a two-year action plan to enhance ASEAN-GCC cooperation.

In their joint communique, the foreign ministers also agreed to step up cooperation in the fields of the environment, energy, trade and investment, climate change, food security, people-to-people contact, manpower, transportation, information technology and communications.

Yayan said the foreign ministers also agreed to look into the possibility of forming an ASEAN-GCC Foundation. (ant/dar)
