Batam municipality on Wednesday revoked the permit of a popular karaoke club, Satellite Ozon KTV, for operating during the first eve of Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.
"Satellite Ozon KTV was found operating during the first eve of Ramadan," a member of the municipal tourism office, Marzuki, told The Jakarta Post.<>
The nightspot had violated a regulation which was decided through the municipality's leadership meeting Aug. 15., Marzuki said.
The regulation banned entertainment centers in the city from operating on four days during Ramadan; the first day of Ramadan, Nuzulul Qur'an Day (the 17th day of Ramadan), the eve of Idul Fitri and the Idul Fitri holiday.
"Many of the night spot's employees would lose their jobs with the revocation of the permit, but we must firmly uphold the law," Marzuki said.
The municipality issued a regulation which still allowed operators to open their premises between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. during Ramadan, except on the four days mentioned above.
Some operators believed they were legally untouchable and still opened during the fasting month, because they were backed by certain security forces, Marzuki said.
Earlier, Batam Mayor Ahmad Dahlan told the Post his office would strictly oversee nightspot activities during Ramadan, in order to prevent immoral acts from being committed.
"The ruling was based on the inputs of authorized agencies and the MUI. However, as a form of religious tolerance, we did not forbid them from operating throughout the whole month," Dahlan said.
The municipality's decision to allow operators to open their entertainment spots was hailed by the Barelang Entertainment Service Association.
"This time, the decision was quite fair. We will follow the rules issued by the municipality. We will also ask nightspot operators to abide by the operating hours," association chairman Gembira Ginting said recently.
Separately, MUI Riau Islands chapter chairman Azhari Abbas said he was dissatisfied at the partial closure (instead of a month-long ban).
"The revocation of this operator's license shows that these businessmen in the entertainment sector did not respect Ramadan. We demand that the municipality does more than just revoke the permit, but also closes similar centers for the whole month," Azhari said on Wednesday.
MUI sent an official letter of protest to the municipality against the regulation, he said.
The council had demanded the closure of the night spots for the whole month of Ramadan, Azhari said, days before the municipality issued the regulation.
Earlier, Azhari said the ruling, endorsed by the municipal council, had reflected political motives ahead of the 2009 elections -- of parties looking to gain support, especially from business people and workers. (dar)
