The House of Representatives is scheduled to endorse a bill on education legal entities after almost two years of deliberations marred by a series of public protests.
The House's Commission X overseeing education, culture, sports and tourism, agreed Monday to table the bill for approval during a plenary session of the legislature.<>
The bill grants education entities from elementary to secondary levels with the autonomy to manage their own institutions.
Some groups criticized the bill, saying institutions could use their autonomy to "commercialize" education.
The allegation was however denied by the government and lawmakers who said the financing schemes outlined in the bill limited the fees education agencies could charge to a maximum of one-third of their operating costs.
The education commission rejected National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo's request earlier this month for the House to include additional articles on management of education legal entities, saying it would unnecessarily prolong the deliberations. (jp/dar)
