Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa on Sunday made an unscheduled inspection of the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Natalegawa made the unscheduled inspection on the sidelines of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) foreign ministerial meeting he was attending.<<>br />
The foreign minister made the inspection to see if the consulate general`s services to Indonesians in Saudi Arabia ran smoothly, said a media release from KJRI Jeddah on Monday.
Natalegawa started his inspection from the diplomatic office room, and then saw the immigration service, and Wisma Kasih Sayang (the building of love) where at least 116 problematic Indonesian migrant workers were sheltered.
Indonesian Consul General in Jeddah , Zakaria Anshar, who accompanied the foreign minister in the inspection, said besides giving consular services to an average of 150 people coming to the consulate every day, KJRI Jeddah was also sending its staffers into the field once every two weeks to provide consular services to Indonesian citizens across Jidda.
Anshar said the field services were meant for Indonesians living hundreds of kilometers from the KJRI office, and to maintain communications with them.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Oman Abdullah Gatot Abdullah Mansyur said trade and economic relations between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia were going well.
Gatot said trade between the two countries had grown by an average of 8.9 percent per year in the period 2005-2009, The trade balance between the two countries in 2009 showed US$4.02 billion on the Indonesian side and US$2.1 billion on the Saudi Arabian side.
He said the Saudi Development Fund , in cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) would soon invest US$70 million in a university hospital in Sumatra.
The Indonesian agriculture minister was expected in Saudi Arabia on June 10 to establish business contacts with the local government.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Natalegawa said Indonesian relations with Saudi Arabia should not be limited only to religious affairs such as the hajj pilgrimage but also cover other interests. (ant/dar)
