Former President KH Abdurrahman Wahid Passes Away

Former president Abdurrahman Wahid, or Gus Dur, passed away at Cipto Mangungkusumo Hospital at 18.45 local time on Wednesday, his personal secretary said.

"Gus Dur was pronounced dead at 18.40 Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) and now preparations are being made for him to be laid in state," his personal secretary Sulaeman told ANTARANews.<>

He said Gus Dur began to lapse into a critical condition on Wednesday noon and all close relatives and leaders of the Nahdhatul Ulama organization were gathered at his beside.

The signs of his critical condition were immediately reported to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who came to the hospital at 18.30 and left the hospital half an hour later, he said.

Gus Dur was born in Denanyar village, Jombang district, East Java, on August 4, 1940. He is survived by his wife, Sinta Nuriyah, and four daughters, namely Alissa Qotrunnada Munawaroh, Zannuba Arifah Chafsoh, Annita Hayatunnufus, and Inayah Wulandari.

He served as the country`s fourth president from October 20, 1999 to August 24, 2001. (dar)
