The government has banned the distribution of imported dairy milk from China and advised the public to temporarily stop consuming Chinese dairy products to avoid possible contaminations of melamine.
"The Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is currently checking all dairy products from China. The result will be available over the next three days," Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said in a statement read by the ministry's spokesperson Lily S. Sulistyowati, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday.<>
More than 53,000 infants have become sick and four babies have died in China after being fed baby formula laced with melamine, a banned industrial chemical.
Melamine is used in making plastics and is high in nitrogen, which registers as protein in milk tests. Excessive consumption of melamine can cause kidney stones, which can lead to kidney failure. Infants are particularly vulnerable.
So far, melamine has not only been found in baby milk, but also in other types of dairy products such as yogurt and candy.
Lily said there was only one dairy brand from China circulating legally in Indonesia -- Guozhen -- and that its products are for adult consumption.
However, she said the ministry had been conducting field monitoring since Sept. 18 on possible illegal distribution of all kinds of dairy products from China.
"We have notified regional BPOM branches to conduct monitoring."
Earlier on Sunday, the Hong Kong government announced that tests found melamine in Chinese-made Nestle milk. The Dairy Farm milk was made by Nestle's division in the Chinese coastal city Qingdao, it said.
The Swiss food and drinks giant issued a statement Sunday saying that none of its Chinese-made dairy products contained melamine, the Associated Press reported.
Meanwhile, Singapore said Sunday melamine was detected in samples of White Rabbit's Creamy Candy. The popular Chinese milk candy was pulled from shelves in the Philippines last year after health officials claimed it was tainted with formaldehyde.
Chinese candy maker Guan Sheng Yuan Co. denied the Philippine's allegations, saying the candies tested were likely to be counterfeit versions and that subsequent tests showed samples of the candy were formaldehyde-free.
Already on Friday, Singapore suspended the sale and import of all Chinese milk and dairy products include milk, ice-cream, yogurt, chocolate, biscuits and candy, as well as any other products containing milk from China as an ingredient.
Japan, Malaysia and Brunei have also recalled or banned Chinese- made dairy products.
According to Reuters, a China state media has reported that 20 percent of dairy companies investigated in the wake of the melamine scandal have been found to have produced baby formula tainted with melamine. (jp/dar)
