Population density in urban areas indicated by millions of people traveling home, well-known as mudik may be considered as the failure of Indonesia’s government to develop urban areas. Matters dealing with the urbanization that can no longer be restricted should be resolve as immediately as possible.
Respecting the fact, Vice Chairman of Yogyakarta’s Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Board, KH Mohammad Maksum told here on Thursday (2/11) that the government need now such brilliant measures in overcoming it.
<>“The imbalance of development by sector of village-city, traditional-modern, agriculture-industry is absolutely a failure of the developments and a destruction in rural areas,” Maksum told NU Online.According to Maksum, the government has so far focused on urban developments more and more rather than rural ones by providing funds. This would in turn place agricultural sector as a subordinate of the urban developments or be regarded as a merely supporting tool.
“Protection upon the rupiah currency, importation of excessive food, controlling over the food price to dam up the inflation, infrastructure, credit matters, and so on have been pro urban and industrial interests and damaged the agriculture in the name of the modern urban developments,” he said.
Rural areas, he added, have not so far produced anything else except raw materials and cheap foodstuffs. Ironically, the government has likely ignored the matters. “Because of this, the victims are majority of Nahdlatul Ulama followers living in villages,” he said. (nam/dar)
