The government will not revise the profit target of state firms for 2008 and 2009 despite the continued rise in global crude prices and the government`s plan to raise the prices of subsidized fuel oils, a minister said.
"Until now, we still have no plan to lower the profit target of state firms for this year and next year," State Enterprises Minister Sofyan A Djalil said at the weekend.<>
The government has set the profit target of state firms at Rp70 trillion to Rp75 trillion for 2008 and at Rp90 trillion to Rp100 trillion for 2009.
The minister believed the state firms would be able to make adjustments to respond to the rise in fuel prices and energy costs by operating more efficiently.
Citing an example, he said, the desalination project carried out by state fertilizer company Pupuk Kaltim (PKT) to support its factories` performance was part of efforts to cut energy costs.
"The desalination project will help the company lower its energy costs by Rp2.5 billion per month. Other state firms will hopefully do the same in response to the rise in energy costs," he said.
To that end, the government would encourage state firms to switch from gas to coal to meet their need for cheaper energy, he said.
He said the government`s decision to slash budget allocations to state agencies and the current surge in global crude prices had yet to have a significant impact on state firms` performance. (ant)
