Indonesian former president KH Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid said that a change in society would succeed if it bases itself mainly on deep-rooted tradition having emerged in the country.

Gus Dur made the remarks as speaking at the Religious Art Festival for Peace held by the Soka Gakkai International of Indonesia in collaboration with the Indonesian Muslim Artists and Culturalists Institute (Lesbumi), and the Indonesian Youth National Committee (KNPI) at JITEC, Mangga Dua, Jakarta on Sunday (13/7).<>

"The changes should be rooted from the legacies of the nation and state. Japanese people including Soka Gakkai are the ones that are proud of their own tradition," Gus dur said.

The ex-general chairman of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, expressed that he had personally taken a lot of lessons from Japanese prominent men like Tokugawa Leyasu. Gus Dur said that Tokugawa had instituted numerous reforms to make Japan open to all foreigners without ignoring the importance of its tradition.

The second, Gus Dur said, was Yoshida Shigeru, the Japanese political leader who served several terms as prime minister of Japan during most of the critical transition period after World War II, when Allied troops occupied the country and Japan was attempting to build new democratic institutions.

Gus Dur who is the leader of Ciganjur Islamic boarding "Pesantren" school was of view that Yoshida Shigeru had successfully fueled the spirit of proudness aimed at awakening and competing with other countries.

"This should be struggled for by Indonesia if it expects to do changes, and if we want to succeed in development we must inevitably urge such a clean-up drive against corruption," Gus Dur said. (mkf)
