Gus Dur insists on climbing presidential seat

KH Abdurahman Wahid, a former Indonesian president who was brought down from power by lawmakers in July 2001, reaffirmed his commitment Saturday to run for presidency next year.

“I am prevented by President SBY, vice president JK and all political parties except for PKB from becoming a presidential candidate. Let them try to stymie me, we will see what happens,” Wahid said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.<>

Wahid or also known as Gus Dur said that he had received many support from various level of the society to run again from president.

“I feel confident. I think I will win,” the former general chairman of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) said.

So far, he said, there had been 14 figures interested in running for the presidency had come to him for support.

“I told them I will give my support if I’m not a candidate,” he said half jokingly. (jp/dar)
