Habib Luthfi: Nahdliyin should follow example of early ulema

The charismatic ulema from Pekalongan, Central java, Habib Luthfi bin Ali bin Hasyim bin Yahya called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) to follow the example of early ulema. Because of this, he said, the Nahdliyin could take on the importance of the spirit of unity among Muslim adherents.

Habib Luthfi said although the ulema had died, they could still give us lessons. "Look at the Mbah Cholil grave (Syaikhona Cholil, Bangkalan) and Sunan Ampel's.<>

Habib Luthfi said in the sacred places there had been many economic activities enable people to drive their economic wheel.

Habib Luthfi who is also general chairman of the Idaroh Aliyah Jam'iyyah Ahlith Thariqah Al-Mu'tabarah An Nahdliyyah made the remarks at a commemoration of the 85th anniversary of NU in Bangkalan, Madura, East Java Tuesday (5/8).

He further explained the saints (wali) and ulema had capability of uniting any emerging differences. He gave an example that those coming to the pilgrim centers had different dzikr.

Have they ever been in dispute as a result of having different dzikr, he asked.

The commemoration was attended by some ten thousands across Bangkalan, chairman of the Advisory Council of East Java's Regional Board KH Miftachul Akhyar, chairman of Bangkalan's NU Branch Board R KH Fachrillah Aschal and Bangkalan's regent R KH Fuad Amin.  (ndi/rif)
