General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi did appreciate the cultural collaboration between Soka Gakkai International of Indonesia (SGI-Indonesia), Indonesian Muslim Artists and Culturalists Institute (Lesbumi), and Indonesian Youth National Committee (KNPI).
Hasyim expressed his appreciation on the sidelines of his meeting with Vice President of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Mr. Kenji Yoshigo and his entourage at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday (10/7).<>
The cultural "Religious Art Festival for Peace" collaboration, he added, should be a means to recognize and appreciate their own culture.
Hasyim said that NU was already familiar with Hindu-Buddhist culture. For him, both Hinduism and Buddhism with their all cultures had formerly come into existence.
"Before Islam came to Indonesia, Hinduism and Buddhism had formerly existed. It means Islam has know known them," Hasyim said, adding what was different was theology for it "is related to each individual belief".
"Nevertheless we must remain in unity for the culture is for humanity. Culture, wherever it is from, should be recognized as long as it is not opposed to religious tenets," Hasyim who is also the President of World Conference of Religions for Peace said.
While Kenji Yoshigo expressed his gratitude and highest appreciation to the NU that he considered to have helped so much.
The event that would reportedly be attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and President of Soka Gakkai International Daisaku Ikeda would be held at the Jakarta's International Event and Convention Center on 13 July ahead.
The much-awaited event is aimed at both promoting the spirit of brotherhood and tolerance among religious adherents and giving a comprehensive understanding of the importance of religious art and culture.
SGI is a Buddhist association with 12 million members in 190 countries around the world. It has focused more on peace, education, and culture. (dar)
