Surabaya, NU Online
General Chairman of the Central Board Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) organization KH Hasyim Muzadi called on (Nahdliyin) NU members not to be non voters and exercise more caution to a call for being non voters for certain political purposes.

"Being a non voter is useless, as NU organization often urges their members and the community in general to use their voting right. Use your voting right in a responsible manner for your faith and state," he said here on Sunday (20/7).

In addition, h<>e said that certain parties asking NU members to be non voters should be cautioned, because this had happened in Central and West Java to increase the number of non voters by money politics, the objective of which is to foil or block their political rivals.

"Therefore, please be careful with the calls to become non voters, as it is sometime done in the camp of political rivals, especially that non voters tend to be negative toward the ongoing democratic process," he was quoted by Antara as saying.

To the East Java gubernatorial election organizing committee, Hasyim called for a sincere and transparent counting of votes by involving witnesses at polling stations in line with their functions.

"The problem is that the embrio of conflict partly comes from intervention of bureaucrats which eventually triggered an envy to the formation of different perception on the process of democracy," he said.

On the occasion, Hasyim also called on the political elite not to divert democracy by giving foodstuffs to the poor and uneducated people. (dar)
